An empty corner is not automatically a good place to grow. Plants need usable light and airflow; you need room to top up the water, harvest and clean. This checklist helps prevent an attractive setup from proving impractical later.
1. Start with the light source
A model without integrated grow lights needs a very bright location or a suitable supplementary grow light. A south- or west-facing window generally provides more light than a north-facing one, but the amount changes with the seasons and is greatly reduced by distance, overhangs and surrounding buildings.
With integrated LED lighting, the main consideration is a consistent distance between the light and the leaves. University of Minnesota Extension often cites 15 to 30 centimetres as a practical distance from a grow light for hydroponic lettuce and herbs, but the light's product specifications and the crop's response remain decisive.
2. Avoid heat and cold draughts
Do not place the tower directly beside a radiator, heater or air-conditioning outlet. Large temperature swings affect evaporation and can heat or cool the nutrient solution. Crops differ: basil likes warmth, while many types of lettuce grow better in cooler conditions. A room with a stable temperature is therefore more suitable than a place that gets hot during the day and cools sharply at night.
3. Give leaves room to breathe
Gentle airflow helps carry moist air away from the leaves. Do not squeeze the tower into an enclosed alcove or let plants completely overgrow one another. More air is not always better: a strong, continuous airflow can dry out the leaves. Choose a place with normal room circulation or, if necessary, use a small fan on a low setting.
4. Check the floor and access
- Place the system on a level surface that can support its weight.
- Leave room for topping up, measuring, harvesting and removing components.
- Use an earthed socket in accordance with the product manual and avoid loose extension leads across walkways.
- Protect a sensitive wooden floor from spills and wipe up spilled water immediately.
- Keep plugs and connections away from splashing water and do not modify electrical components yourself.
5. Consider day and night
Grow lights are functional lighting. In a bedroom or beside a television, the set lighting period may be disruptive. Choose a place where the light cycle fits your daily routine, and also give plants a dark period in accordance with the instructions for the chosen crop.
Quick placement check
The location is suitable when the tower is stable, all sides are accessible, the leaves receive enough light and gentle airflow, the reservoir is not beside a heat source and cables are routed safely. Check the plants' response after a week: leggy growth often indicates too little light, while bleaching or scorched edges call for a check of the light, nutrition and temperature.
