Calculating energy use and maintenance

Use measured power and your own electricity tariff; base maintenance on observation rather than a rigid schedule.

A reliable monthly cost starts not with a marketing figure, but with power, operating hours and your current energy price. Maintenance works in much the same way: look at water quality, plant debris, pump operation and deposits, and use the system and nutrient-product manuals as your starting point.

How to calculate electricity use

The formula is: watts ÷ 1,000 × hours per day × days = kWh. Multiply the result by your total price per kWh. Calculate the pump and lighting separately if they run on different schedules.

Example: a 90-watt light running for 14 hours per day theoretically uses 0.09 × 14 × 30 = 37.8 kWh over 30 days. This is only a calculation example, not measured Mazah consumption. Actual consumption depends on the power drawn, the set cycle and any control system. A plug-in energy meter provides the best check at home.

Power is not the same as energy use

Watts describe power at a given moment; kWh is energy over time. A 100-watt device that is not running continuously therefore does not use 2.4 kWh per day. When comparing systems, also consider light output and growing results: fewer watts are not automatically more efficient if the plants receive insufficient light as a result.

Weekly check

  • Check the water level, pump operation and the visible spray or flow pattern.
  • Remove fallen leaves and root debris before they enter the system.
  • Measure pH and EC with calibrated meters when managing the nutrients yourself.
  • Inspect roots and leaves for discolouration, odour, slime or drying out.
  • Check cables, plugs and hoses without opening electrical components.

Reservoir and nutrient solution

In a recirculating system, the solution changes because plants do not absorb water and ions in exactly the same proportions. Topping up with only water or only nutrients can shift the balance over time. Follow the replacement and dosing guidance for the system and nutrient product you use. Penn State Extension stresses that recipes are specific to the crop and growth stage, and that incorrectly mixed concentrated nutrients can precipitate and block lines.

Cleaning between crops

Switch off the power, remove plant debris and dismantle only components that the manual says may be removed. Clean surfaces first, as dirt reduces the effectiveness of a disinfectant. Use only products suitable for the material and intended purpose, follow the label and dosage, rinse where instructed and never mix different cleaning products.

Cornell Cooperative Extension highlights the importance of a consistent cleaning and disinfection process for commercial hydroponic growing. The same basics remain useful at home: clean water, clean hands and tools, no build-up of organic material and no standing spilled water.

When should you act immediately?

Act immediately if the pump stops, the root surface is dry, there is a leak, you smell burning or a cable is damaged. If there is an electrical problem or leak, switch the system off safely and contact the supplier. Do not add extra nutrients at random when plant problems are unexplained; first check pH, EC, temperature, light, pump operation and root health.
